MY ART AND THINGS BLOG
“No matter how many times you save the world, it always manages to get back in jeopardy again. Sometimes I just want it to stay saved! You know, for a little bit? I feel like the maid; I just cleaned up this mess! Can we keep it clean for… for ten minutes!”
“I think a lot about what makes a strong female character. You know, movies and TV shows, these things have influence, my own website. So I think the question of “What makes a strong female character?”, often goes misinterpreted. And instead we get these two-dimensional superwomen, who maybe have one quality that’s played up a lot. Like, you know, a Catwoman type, or she plays her sexuality up a lot and it’s seen as power. But they’re not strong characters who happen to be female, they’re completely flat and they’re basically cardboard characters.
The problem with this is that then people expect women to be that easy to understand, and women are mad at themselves for not being that simple. When in actuality, women are complicated. Women are multifaceted. Not because women are crazy, but because people are crazy. And women happen to be people!”-Tavi Gevinson for TEDTalks [x]

I Want You to Stop by Dorian Inn
So.
Fucking.
Cute.
Tracks used:
Dog Blood - Middle Finger
Foxsky - The Whip (Udachi Remix)
Feed Me - Raw Chicken
Mord Fustang - Magic Trooper
Short and mostly unplanned 128bpm mixing session, experimenting with filters, key changes and loops. Pretty much just wanted to find something that would mix with Udachi’s ‘whip’ remix (because damn that’s a good track) and went from there.
High Point: Finally being able to pull off the Middle Finger -> The Whip transition using loops, and getting the timing (mostly) right. Only seems to fuck up if I use the full vocal as a loop, so I’ll keep that in mind. Changing it up every 8 or 16 bars might be a good idea too.
Low Point: Timing issues aside, fucking up on track choices when mixing out of Magic Trooper, hence why it fades out so quickly. I need to use it as a bridge track/DJ tool rather than letting it play out, because it kind of creates a mood whiplash, but ‘Raw Chicken’ is a weird track that’s hard to mix out of. Might follow it up with ‘The Spell’ (also by Feed Me) or just skip Magic Trooper entirely…
Next time: Try more shit with filters and key changes as part of a transition. A proper interface would help with this, but beggars can’t be choosers, especially since I had an accident with my glasses and need a new pair (so CDJs are probably out of the question ‘til Xmas).
Four Redesigns I did for She Has No Head’s new article by Kelly Thompson
The theme were characters that need a redesign.
My pal Kelly Thompson has an awesome post up this week with some redesigns of female costumes by Kris Anka and Meredith McLaren. Above are Anka’s design for Raven, Harley Quinn, Starfire and Emma Frost. Go take a look. Sadly the comments more than meet internet commenting standards.
aurora and stars (by John A.Hemmingsen)
I mentioned before some of my favorite character designs in the world of comics and have been meaning to tackle this subject again. I came to realize, however, that “character design” is itself a fairly massive subject, and that it would be best to break the topic down into separate…
